Kyle's Christmas Concert

Last night was the Uintah Elementary Choir's annual Christmas concert.  It made me a little sad...this is Kyle's last year.  Of course, next year Alec will probably want to start but still...my oldest child's Elementary School days are quickly coming to an end...

I loved the decorations!

Kyle always looks so serious when he's singing...Cole teases him about "killing" the song.  He really just wants to do a good job...

This year, Talia actually enjoyed listening to the concert.  She wanted to sing along, but she was disappointed that they didn't sing "Frosty the Snowman" ;)

"Santa is the Man"...but the man under the suit is mine....Kyle did a really good job playing a cool Santa!

Of course, what's the annual concert without "The 12 Days of Christmas"...complete with actions?

It was my favorite concert they've ever done, I thought they did an excellent job!

Our Annual December injury...

Almost every year, sometime close to Christmas (and a couple of times ON Christmas), we end up in the hospital for one reason or another.  I blame it on Kyle...he started it by being born on December 23rd...we spent our first Christmas as a family in the hospital for part of the day, and it's never really stopped (and I wouldn't have it any other way...at least the birthday part :))

Last Thursday, Alec was playing a made up game with his friends at lunch recess...he tried to "attack" his friend, the friend "dodged", and Alec landed hard on his hands on the concrete.  His teachers cleaned up the scrapes, but didn't think anything else was wrong.  He stayed the rest of the day at school, but first thing when he got home, he was telling me about his injury, and I was having trouble understanding him.  He was out of it, pale, clammy, a little shocky.  Then I noticed his left wrist was quite swollen.  I was pretty sure it was probably broken, so when Cole got home, I took Alec over to Urgent care.  (I was actually pretty glad that the injury happened during "normal business hours"...all I had to pay was a regular copay, instead of an ER copay.  We are generally not that lucky with our injuries and illnesses.)  Urgent care took X-rays, and we saw the covering MD.  She showed me the X-rays, then proceeded to tell me that she didn't read kids' X-rays, so we would have to wait for the Radiologist to read it the next day.  Now, knowing what I know about reading X-rays, I saw clearly the fracture in his wrist.  I also knew from previous experience with Kyle that they wouldn't cast his arm until the swelling decreased, so it didn't bother me too much to wait.  They splinted his arm (it was really cool, they molded fiberglass to his arm, then wrapped it with an ace bandage).

Of course, the call came Friday afternoon that we would  need to see Orthopedics.  We couldn't get an appointment until Monday, which irritated me a little, but his wrist was still swollen under the bandages, so we probably would have had to wait anyway.  The splint made it easy to deal with it over the weekend.

So, today I took him to his appointment.

Waiting for his cast...

He chose Red of course, it's his favorite color.

I'm a little worried...the MD told us that the type of fracture he has typically doesn't heal very well or easily.  The fact that he's a child and his bones are still more flexible works in his favor, but he'll probably be in the cast for 6 weeks, and they want to see him and do X-rays every 2 weeks to make sure it's healing.
At least it's not summer, when he would have to miss out on swimming.

So, now both of my boys have broken their left arm, as did I when I was younger.  Hopefully we won't end up 3 for 3 in a couple of years ;)

Fun...

I had the opportunity to watch my 2 year old nephew Hunter on Thursday.  Now, if you know my nephew, you know that he can be a difficult child for his parents, but when he comes over to my house, he's always so much fun!  Talia was so excited to have him come play...

2nd Place!!!!!

I'm so proud of my (soon to be) 12 year old!

Kyle's been working hard (with a lot of..."encouragement") on his science fair project for the past month or so.  He's always been a smart kid, and he enjoys science, but working on a deadline is a concept we're still working on...he takes after me at that age, I was always the worst procrastinator (remember Mom and Dad?).  I finally understand why my parents were frustrated all those years....

He took 2nd Place in his category!
He built a Static Electricity detector, and tested different materials to see whether they carried a positive or negative static charge.

All set up...
From December 2010

We got all set up, only to realize that Kyle had forgotton to unplug the detector when he put it up, and his battery was drained.  I rushed home to try to find a 9 volt battery...we had one, but since I couldn't remember when I bought it (It had to be at least 5 years old, it was buried at the back of a junk drawer), it didn't have enough power...he was lucky he didn't have to demonstrate, only explain.  I was tired from working the last 2 nights, and I was really frustrated, and a little worried, but it all worked out.  If we go on to district, I'll make sure he has a fresh battery AND a spare just in case...

After we went back that night and found out he'd won 2nd place..
From December 2010

It was a lot of hard work, but we're really proud of him!  He's really turning that corner between child and young adult.  We've had a difficult autumn, with him making what I would call poor choices, but we've had a couple of good weeks now, and he's trying really hard to do what's right.  He's exactly 2 weeks away from being old enough to hold the priesthood...(cue my teary eyes)

In other news...
Talia, throwing a minor tantrum when we went to help Kyle set up...
From December 2010

We've officially reached a "difficult" stage.  Most people know that Talia has been my easiest child.  Kyle was actually very easy too, until he turned this same age (Alec was difficult as an infant..3 is the age he actually became easier, probably because he lives in his own little world most the time).  Talia has hit 3 1/2, and believe me, I know it.  She is very smart, very social, and is constantly testing boundaries.  She currently thinks the word "No" doesn't apply to her, and when I have to get firm about it, dissolves into tears.

"Drama" has new meaning at our house.

When I was pregnant with Talia, people warned me that girls were more dramatic.  Now, theoretically I knew this, but both my boys were highly emotional and on the more dramatic side anyway, so I thought I was prepared.  Talia, however, has topped the drama scale set by my boys by a LARGE margin.

Cole's theory is that it's hormonal, even at her young age, and that she is on the same hormone cycle as me.  I'd love to pass that off as "male" fiction, but unfortunately, I see a correlation.  Dang hormones.

She's also exploring her nurturing side, much to my delight.  It's always fascinating to me to experience the differences in my boys and my girl...My boys are tender hearted, but watching my daughter lovingly tuck in her multitude of stuffed animals, insist that they have blankets (I continue to be glad I saved most her baby blankets, because there is always a need), and of course, they all have to sleep on her bed with her.  Sometimes there's only a sliver of room for her on her bed, with the way she has them positioned.  She doesn't care, she wants them all with her.  I remember having a few "special" animals or dolls that were my favorites, but she doesn't play favorites...she loves ALL of them and gives all of them pretty equal time.  She loves her Littlest Pet Shop pets as well, and loves to make any shoe she can find into a vehicle for them.  Of course, any princesses are also at the top of her list, and listening to her play with all her little figures is highly entertaining.  I'm constantly amazed at the story lines she comes up with at her age...but maybe I shouldn't be, because all my children have active imaginations.

Alec...still lives in his own head a lot.  I worry the most about him, perhaps, because I can't anticipate what he's thinking like I can with the other two.  He's cruising through school, I'm SOOOO glad I didn't hold him back a year because of his late birthday.  Socially, he finally has seemed to make one or two friends who understand him, which has eased my mind...he's had problems having close friends, so it's nice to hear him talk about playing with the same kids on a daily basis.

The things we worry about as parents, I never realized how scary and rewarding  parenting can be...sometimes all in the same moment.  Sometimes I think I will never be as good a mom as mine, or some of the other shining examples I have the privilege to call my friends.  My work hours make me tired, grumpy, and less than patient, I'm a perfectionist, which makes me a little on the critical side (even as I try not to be).  Then I realize that my kids are loved, and they KNOW that they are loved.  Hopefully, that's all that matters.

Journey to Bethlehem

We took advantage of a unique opportunity last night.  The Mountain View Baptist Church in Layton puts on a "Christmas themed haunted house" (as Cole puts it), themed around events surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus.  For several years, we've pondered going, but it never seemed to work out with our schedules.  Cole actually took the kids last year while I was working, but after waiting an hour, and being told it was another hour's wait, with 3 little kids, he gave up.

We were excited to surprise the kids with this unique experience.  We dressed warmly and headed to the church, arriving right as they were scheduled to open.  Or so we thought.  Despite their website saying they were open at 5, they were not open.  Apparently, they weren't going to be open until 6.  (This is my only complaint about the experience...when you are the "religious minority" in an area, and trying to pull in as many people as possible, shouldn't all the information you put out into the community be correct? ) We weren't the only ones who arrived thinking it started at 5, but being early did have its advantage.  We were only about 10 people back in the line, and were part of the first group through the Journey this season.

Waiting...

They finally opened the doors and let us inside around 6.  We received our passports with our Hebrew names, and went into the chapel to wait.

We were led into a "courtyard", where we were "adopted" into a family to avoid the penalties of  Roman Law (groups that were not family were not allowed to congregate...my boys were fascinated by the history lesson, and Talia thought the Roman soldiers were really scary).  We then went to the family home, where we were informed by Roman soldiers that we needed to go to Bethlehem to pay our taxes and register for the census.
From December 2010

We traveled to Bethlehem, hearing the rumors of the birth of a new king, encountering Madgi searching for this king, witnessing the angel proclaiming the birth to the shepherds, and even being robbed along the treacherous way.  Throughout the process, we were "roughed up" by the Roman soldiers, who demanded to see our traveling passports regularly.  Alec, my extremely literal child, took everything to heart and held onto his passport like his life depended on it.  Which it would have, in that time in history.

We arrived in Bethlehem, paid our tax, registered for the census, and our passports were stamped.  We spent some time in the marketplace, then tried to find a place to stay.  The inn was full(of course), but we did head to the stable to meet our friends Joseph and Mary, and meet the new King born.

It was a really neat experience.  As I walked through it with my family, I was able to get into the spirit.  Being a mom, remembering how it feels to be heavily pregnant, and imagining how difficult it really was for Mary to travel so far, heavy with child, under so much oppression...It was very spiritual for me.  My family enjoyed it as well, the kids have learned the story, but to experience it puts things into such a different sperspective.

I was sad I wasn't able to get better pictures...my camera does well in low light situations, but there was almost no light for most of the journey.  Cole got a few better ones, posted on his blog.

Trimming the Tree...

We had a great time decorating our Christmas Tree on Sunday night.  For the first time since we started letting our children help, I didn't feel at all stressed about it.  I guess that's one of the advantages to having them grow up..and right now, with my oldest son about ready to turn 12 and go to Young Men's, and my youngest child about to become a Sunbeam, I need to remember the positive things that come with them growing up.

We turned on one of our favorite Christmas Cd's, David Lanz's "Christmas Eve".  It's an instrumental selection of spiritual Christmas favorites interspersed with some of his original Christmas material.  It has been our traditional "Trimming the Tree" CD since Kyle was a baby.

The kids were really excited to get started...

All the kids seemed to understand how important it was to be careful...even Talia.  It was easy for me to let them place their own ornaments (I figured I could adjust things around later if necessary).

Thanksgiving and Black Friday Madness 2010

Thanksgiving was a wonderful, relaxing day.  We went over to my brother's house this year.  Our dinner was delicious as usual.  Brenda took on the primary dinner responsibilities of the turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, yams, and vegetable, and made a perfect meal!  It was sooooo yummy!  I made rolls and jello, and whipped a quart of cream for the jello and the pies.  My mom made her mini pie shells, with chocolate and lemon filling.  Yum!

After dinner, we all sat around talking for awhile, reminiscing and laughing, and missing my sister and her family, who didn't join us this year.

Cole left about 4:30 to head to Michael's for a gift we wanted that was a killer deal...and then home to get a nap in before heading out for "Midnight Madness"

Mom, Brenda, Kyle and I had a blast playing Nertz...
After awhile, my brother and dad joined us "girls" and Kyle (it's so nice that he's old enough now to play games with the adults!) for some Scattergories...which was fun despite the fact that I am way out of practice...

I left my brother's with the kids around 7:30.  When we got home, Cole was still asleep, so I tried to keep the kids as quiet as possible so he could finish his nap.  I knew that we had a long night ahead of us.
Cole woke about 8:30, we discussed our shopping strategy, put the kids to bed, and I tried to take a nap...
Cole went to Walmart to wait for the deal we wanted that was starting at midnight.  I dozed a little, but finally gave up around 12:15.  I got ready and waited for Cole to get home so we could go to Target.

We got to Target around 1:40.  We both dressed in layers, the warmest stuff we own, and I had handwarmers and toe warmers, but it was 11 degrees...It was cold.  Bitterly cold.  We did meet some really nice people in line, and had a good time chatting and strategizing (some of them were first timers!) Once again, I have to compliment Target on the way that they organize their Black Friday event....best place to shop.  By the time 3:30 came around, I was so, so cold...it was all I could do to see the end in sight.  4 am came, and we headed in...we got exactly what we wanted, and got checked out in time to head to Kmart.
Kmart had something I wanted for Kyle's birthday.  We got to Kmart right as the doors were opening, found what we were looking for, then had to wait to get checked out.  We got home around 6:30, and I crashed into bed, and Cole crashed on the couch.  I was still cold to the core...so I heated a rice bag to take to bed with me...after awhile, I finally got fully warm again.

After recovering (somewhat), I put away our Thanksgiving decorations and cleaned the house in anticipation of putting up our Christmas decorations.  Cole got the tree out, and we plan to decorate it either tonight or tomorrow.  Tomorrow is 2nd Thanksgiving at my Mom's, so that will be another fun day, and maybe my boys will let me get some pictures of them.
