Family

Last week was my Mom's birthday.  We celebrated by getting together as a family this week to bowl and have dinner...

We headed down to Fat Cats.  We first ate dinner at the Pizza Factory, and Mom opened her presents.

Getaway, Day 3

We slept in a little more today. When we got up, we headed up to Park City Mountain Resort. We had breakfast there, and bought tickets to do the Alpine Coaster and the Alpine slide. We rode the Coaster first...

It was WAYYYYYY fun. Then we rode the Alpine slide...which was pretty good. We left and went to the Olymic Park to redeem our Rain check on the zip line....We waited a long time in the sun on this day, and I got FRIED on my arms, but it was way fun. After our zip ride, we went to the outlets to pick up a couple more things we decided we wanted, then we headed home.

It was a really fun trip, and it was nice to have my mom all to myself for a couple of days.

Getaway, Day 2

We didn't rush on Thursday morning. After all, vacation means relaxing. After we woke up, we got ready, had breakfast, and headed up to the Olympic Sports Park. We bought our tickets to ride the Xtreme zip line and the Quicksilver slide, and walked down to the lift. We rode up...

We got stuck behind a couple of kids who slowed down too much, so we didn't get the full effect. We decided to "bounce back", and do both rides again. We bought our bounce back passes, and headed back up. We wanted to do Quicksilver first...our first error in judgement. There was a minor accident on the track, so to follow protocol they shut the entire thing down..and the operator had already taken and torn our tickets, so no chance for a refund. We waited...and finally got down. It was a lot more fun the second time, we went full speed and didn't get stopped. We rode back up to ride the zip, but the line was suddenly long, and the storm clouds were rolling in...they put a "lightening hold" on the rides...we took cover in the ski jump building...and then the rain started POURING. We ended up riding a shuttle back down, and wandered the museum for awhile. Finally the rain lightened enough that we made a break for the car. We drove to a little outdoor shopping center...we would have liked to explore, but the rain made that impossible. We stopped at a great little bakery called Kneaders for a snack...YUM!!!! We went back to our hotel and relaxed, watched some TV, and I took a little nap.

We had been invited to a baby shower for my sister, thrown by her in-laws. It was in Salt Lake, and not to far of a drive, so we wanted to drive down. It was really fun...

By the time we got back to Park City, it was getting late, so we decided to call it a night.

Getaway...Day 1

My mom and I took a little mini vacation this past week. We headed up to Park City for some shopping and fun...

We had a little slow start. When my mom came to pick me up, she noticed that one of her tires was low. We dropped by Les Schwab to get it checked out, and it had a nail in it...so we had to get the tire fixed. We were grateful we caught it before we headed up the canyon...

We arrived, grabbed some lunch, and headed to the Outlets. I got the kids some clothes, myself a wallet, sports bra, and a spatula (yes, I realize that's a little strange, but with all the baking I'm doing, I needed it). I also got to help my mom pick out some very cute new things....we had a great time. After we were done shopping, we thought we'd go check out the Olympic Sports park. Neither of us had been there, and we wanted to see what the activity prices were, as well as what was available. We saw a bunch of cool stuff...

Then we spent almost an hour watching the preliminaries of a ski jumping competition...it was really cool to watch.

This marmot wandered right into the middle of the ski jumping hill...right at the bottom where if he'd been hit, it probably would have killed him and injured the skier...thankfully he crossed without incident...

A side view of the jump...it's amazing how much air they get.

After we were done watching, we went up to Park City Resort. We wandered a bit, ate excellent mexican at the Baja Cantina, and then decided to walk main street.

I was a little disappointed in Main street. Many of the cool stores I remember from years past are gone...and I didn't find anything special in my favorites of the remaining stores. After we walked main street, we headed back to turn in for the night....

No, this time I really mean it...

I WILL be catching up. Actually, after this post, I will be posting a catch up...I may not backdate the actual post, but I will date entries within the post. But first....

I'm having an emotional morning. I'm off work today, our phone line isn't working, and I'm catching up on all the chores that run a household. That's not why I'm emotional, however. Or at least not totally why.

While I've been doing chores, I've been catching up on my TiVo. I watched this week's episode of "The Biggest Loser", which always ends up pulling at my heartstrings. I've also gotten into "Parenthood", which comes on right after. I was watching Tuesday's episode, and it brought a lot of feelings to the surface....

As mothers, I think we all worry about our actions and how they influence our children. As a working mother, I worry, period. I feel lucky to have a full time career that limits my time away from my children. How many full time working (defining "working" as working outside the home, because we all work inside the home as well :)) moms have the option of working at night, while their children are mostly sleeping, having 4 days off, including some weekdays, and only having to have limited amounts of childcare, because of the career I picked? Sure, I sacrifice some sleep, and I'm not always cheerful on little sleep....but I'm here. I'm here to kiss my babies' "owwies", when they're still young enough to want that. To get them off to school every morning. To play princess castle with my daughter, to play dinosaurs and cars with my sons when they were little. I was always taught that I was meant for great things.

My mother got married young, and then had a happy surprise when she got pregnant with me. Her morning sickness was terrible, and she had to drop out of college. I remember how important it was to her and my grandparents to go back and finish her degree. I remember how she would take care of us and study for her classes, and when she got her degree and her teaching job how exciting it was! I always knew I'd work. I didn't always plan on being a mom, but then, in high school, I wanted to be a doctor. Then, I met my amazing husband, and decided that I wanted a family more than I wanted medical school. After exploring various healthcare career options, I am happy with the career path I've taken. However, I have guilt. I sometimes see all the stay at home moms that I'm blessed to be friends with, and feel inadequate. I feel like I can't keep up. I feel blessed to be included, but know that my job and hours naturally exclude me from some things. That's ok. Until my inner mom conscience starts whispering..."shouldn't you do that? ____ does that and that, you should too. _____ can do all that...you should do more".

I really hate that voice.

My children are healthy and happy. They are well adjusted. All of them are very social, relatively fearless. Is that just personality, or is it because they had early daycare exposure? Someone made a comment in my presence last week that I really tried not to take personally. It was meant as encouragement to a mom who needed it, but it struck at the core of my "working Mom" guilt. Should I have tried harder in that area? Did it anyway, even though it made me miserable?

I love what I do. I hold Life and Death in my hands on a daily basis, and mostly, through our Lords help and plan, Life wins. I have bad days at work. There are times when I think the politics will kill me, when the gossip and backbiting drag me into a pit of despair. Nights when I feel like the emotional chill pervading the environment will freeze me to death. When I feel totally isolated. Those nights make me long for my home, my family. Then, gifts of serenity and friendship will reach out, and I remember that it's not about the people, it's about the babies. I was given a gift and talent for healing, and direction in my patriarchal blessing to use this gift. So I remember, and press on.

Today, however, I feel blessed to be at home, in my jammies, playing with my daughter and her princesses, doing laundry, cleaning, and being at home. Even though I have to wait for the Qwest guy to come repair the phone.

I know some of my examples won't make sense to my readers. This post is just for me, to purge my mind, clear my thoughts, and most especially, to express my love and appreciation for all the friends I have...the people I can count on to "hook me up" with serenity and friendship.

That's why I'm publishing it.

Mommy's Turn...

Well, a Mommy has to have her shows too! I'm way excited for the Fall TV...but in the interim...

I just got this in the mail. It's Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip...The complete series. I LOVED this series the season it was on. It only lasted one season...it was right after "The West Wing" ended, and I think people were expecting it to be the same. It wasn't. It's more along the lines of "Sports Night", another smart, funny, and highly under appreciated dramedy. I was never much a fan of "Friends", but in this show, Matthew Perry completely won me over. Along with the rest of the cast. I wanted to buy it right when I saw that it had come out on DVD..but it was more money than I wanted to spend. I was ordering some books from Amazon the other day, and on a whim typed in Studio 60 to see how much it was now...and for $14.57, I had to scoop it up (and good thing too, I noticed when I borrowed the pic to post, it's back up to $24.00 and only 4 copies left)...

I've spent the last couple of days watching episodes and laughing, laughing, laughing. I really like this show...and now I can watch it whenever I need a good laugh. Cole just rolled his eyes at me...he thinks it's funny that I own an entire series on DVD. (Just because I've never watched the OTHER series I own on DVD...But I will. Someday when I'm in the mood ;))

I can hardly wait for Dora to be over, so I can put Talia down for a nap, drag out my craft stuff, and watch episode 6 while stringing my new watchband....
