Solitary Ski Day

I was dying to try out my new ski equipment, so despite the fact that no one else could go, I headed up to Snowbasin yesterday.  It doesn't bother me to ski alone.  A sweet playlist on my iPod, beautiful weather, and great snow contributed to a very phyically active yet mentally relaxing day.

From January 2011

I bought K2 "Inspired Luv" skis, Salomon "Irony Breeze" boots, and cheap poles.  I wasn't intending to buy boots, but they were on sale for a great price.  At that point I was stuck buying poles too, so I bought the least expensive option, figuring I can upgrade later if I want.  I was excited about the ski's, all my research told me that I would most likely be happy with them.  I was a little more hesitant about the boots.  Despite the salesperson's assurance that Salomon boots are built for warmth and comfort, I was a little worried about the price point.  My boots (before the sale) were around $300.  There are boots on the market for twice that and up, would I be happy with a less expensive model?  The only other ski boots I have ever owned were a Christmas gift when I was a junior in High School.  I HATED them.  After even one run, my toes and then my feet would be numb.  Painfully numb.  I now know that they probably weren't fitted properly, but I never wanted to tell my parents that I hated them after they spent so much money.  I really think those boots were the reason I stopped loving skiing in those days.

I LOVED my new ski's.  I could tell from the moment I started down my first run of the day.  They are a "mock" twin tip, so I was worried about weather or not I'd be able to manage them.  I shouldn't of been, I guess that's what happens when you rent equipment for 3 years.  With good ski's, my body remembered that it was a good skier.  I had absolutely no problems, and felt confidence to attempt more difficult runs that I wouldn't have attempted in rental ski's.

I also loved my new boots.  They were very comfortable, easy to get on and off, and my feet stayed nice and warm.  Even after my toe warmers stopped working, my feet stayed warm through the afternoon.  I'm so glad I took advantage of the sale.

It was a beautiful, sunny day up on the slopes.

Up above the icky inversion that is settled in the valley right now, the air was clear and relatively warm.

As always, the scenery does not disappoint....
From January 2011

I spent the morning over on the Strawberry Gondola side, headed back over to the Needles Lodge for a yummy lunch of pizza and a Cream Cheese Danish (I've decided, I really need to learn how to make that particular yummy treat), and skied most of the afternoon over at Strawberry as well.  Around 2, I decided to head over to the Porcupine side of the mountain.  I rode that lift to the top, I wanted to see what the snow was like over there.  I could not find bad snow yesterday.  Despite the fact that it's been a bit since the last storm, the snow still had a packed powder consistency on the groomed runs.  Even in places out of my comfort zone, the snow wasn't bad, just unfamiliar.  I still managed just fine.  I spent the day practicing Carving, taking a few risks, and remembering  not to be lazy with my poles.  By the time my last run of the day came, I knew my body was tired.  My mind, however, was elated at the amazing day I'd had.

How could it not be, surrounded by great snow and images like this?

I'm already looking forward to another ski day...I'll be planning it as soon as my schedule comes out.

Why I love 3 year olds...

Last night, Talia was extremely....energetic.  She kept dragging me off to show me things...the (rather large) pile of stuffed animals and dolls on her bed, the baby stuffed animals she was caring for, the contraband marbles she was playing with...

I was really tired.  Our neighbors are putting new siding on their house, but the resulting sounds of construction made it so that I didn't get any sleep yesterday after working the night before.  I was just trying to crash on the couch, but then, again, I heard her sweet, excited little voice...

"Mommy...MOMMY, come see, come see!!!!"  (while standing at our sliding glass door).

"What do you see?" (me, dragging myself  off the couch because I couldn't resist the joy in her voice).

"The clouds are stripes of orange and purple and pink and blue!"  "Come look Mommy!"

(I come look, and witnessed one of the daily miracles of living in this beautiful place where we live...)

"It's so, so pretty mommy!"  (my daughter, with simple joy in her voice).

She was so excited, and even more so when I got out my camera.  I would have missed it, if it hadn't been for my princess.

I have always been fascinated by the beauty that surrounds us.  I still get caught up in the bright blue skies with splotches of cottony white clouds in the summer, the stark yet perfect stillness and pure white after a winter snowstorm, the soft, sweet spring green that floods the mountains, the beauty of the autumn leaves falling....I love nature scenes, and I love that we live in a place where there's such a variety of beauty to behold seasonally.

I really love that somehow I've been able to pass that love of nature's beauty along to my daughter...that my joy in nature's beauty is also her joy.

It's also fun that her language skills are progressing so that she can express it!

A Baby Shower...

Last night we (me, my mom, and Brenda) threw a baby shower for my sister Heidi. It's been a really long road for Heidi to find the right guy, and start her family, and I just have to say...I am so thankful that Adam came into our family. He is such a great guy, and such a wonderful husband to Heidi. After all the years of watching my sister date guys not worthy of her, I am SOOOOOO glad she and Adam found each other.

Now they've taken the next step, and baby Logan is due in about 5 weeks. I love to throw a party, so it was really fun to put a baby shower together with my Mom and Brenda.

I was in charge of dessert. Like my mom, I don't love to cook, but I do love to bake. Add that to Mindy's influence, and I've discovered that I like to make the presentation as pretty as the baked goods are yummy.
I made our family recipe chocolate chip cookies, which are always a hit, and mini cupcakes.

I decided to try a new recipe for the batter...something specifically for cupcakes. It was really good....and even this morning when I indulged in 2 cupcakes for breakfast, was still really moist and yummy. I took a hint from Mindy, and used the smaller nut cups to bake the cupcakes in. It was GREAT, I was able to fit 25 on a cookie sheet, and only had to run my oven for an hour. (Thanks, Mindy!) Let me tell you, if you have a lot of cupcakes to make, using the nut cups is the way to go.

We always do open house showers...it just seems to be easier for more of our large extended family to come if things are a little less structured. We had a great turn out...

Heidi and my cousin Melody...they are both having boys and due 2 weeks apart, so we just had to compare bellies!
(they look enough alike to be sisters, don't you think? Gotta love the strong DNA on my dad's side of the family!)

After the shower, Talia and I headed home. The sky was so stunning, with all the clouds, and the thunderstorms brewing over Layton, that I decided to get some pictures. I headed to the back of the Baptist church that sits on the top of the hill, and Talia and I walked to the edge to take some pics...

The Dora Hour

I've been trying for awhile to get Talia interested in "Dora the Explorer". Of all the toddler cartoons, it's my favorite. Relatively educational, without being totally annoying. It's something that doesn't drive the whole family crazy...even the boys can tolerate it.

Well, over the last couple of weeks, she finally took interest...and in the fashion of toddlers, Dora has become an obsession...so in limited fashion, we have our daily Dora hour...

Riveted...

I've been recording it onto our DVR so that we can watch at our convenience. Especially since an hour is all she gets...

I used the newly discovered "infinity" mode on my camera to get this pic of the full moon from my front porch...I didn't want to drag out the tripod, so it's a bit blurry, but still pretty...

Nothing else much going on at our house...Kyle and Talia have had a small cold, but are both recovering quickly. The boys seem to be adjusting to school well, and it's actually been easier for me this year than before. Mornings haven't been quite so hard for me, or anyone else for that matter. Our school year routine is working quite well. I may have finally figured out a solution for all the schoolwork and papers that seem to clutter up my kitchen...we'll see.

Halloween is also coming along well...check out Cole's Blog for more info on that...

Happy Labor Day!
