Logan turns 1!

My nephew Logan turned 1 on Sunday.  Heidi and Adam had a golf themed birthday party for him, and we had a great time!

Slippers

From August 2011

My sweet girl has been begging me for slippers since last winter when I was wearing them, but no matter where I went they never had her size.  We went to Carters the other day to get a birthday present for my nephew, and she saw these slippers and was so excited!  They were in her "size" to grow into, so I couldn't resist getting them for her.  She has worn them almost every morning since then!

The first day of School...2011

How did it come to this?  Where did the summer go?  I think we got cheated by those cold, rainy weeks in June.  This morning, I got up early to make a nice hot breakfast for the kids on their first day, like I ususally do.  This year, however, that meant getting up a whole hour earlier, and breakfast in shifts because I now have a child in junior high.

I made pancakes...I use Bisquick, but I have my own addition to the recipe that makes them delish.  Unfortunately, I wasn't fully awake when I started the first batch (morning is NOT my time) and I put in baking soda instead of baking powder...I ruined Kyle's share, with no time to fix it.  Oh well, it's the thought that counts, right?

I'm glad he still lets me take his picture without a fight...

Sending my big kid down the street for his first day having to ride the bus to school...
From August 2011

And then I worried about him, so I walked down the street, barefoot and in my jammies, until I could see the bus and that he'd gotten on.  Yes, I was having anxiety.

Then it was time for round two.  I made pancakes for Alec and Talia, this time the correct way and to rave reviews.  Alec is finally eating food, and the boy who used to eat nothing for breakfast but chocolate pop-tarts is starting to appreciate real food.

The Trip Home...

We woke up and left early with the hopes of having time to make a few stops along the way and still get Cole's rental car back by 6pm.

On the road...

(just ignore the bug splotches on the winshield of my car :) )
Cole and the boys in the rental car ahead of Talia and me.  They had a book on CD they were going to listen to, leaving Talia free to watch movies to her heart's content, and me the freedom of paying closer attention to the road.

While we were stopped at a construction zone, I took advantage and took some pictures...

We drove for a few hours, getting back into southern Utah.  We were excited to stop at Moqui Cave...
Rocks and Minerals, found in the cave during excavation.

They also had a very nice collection of petrified dinosaur tracks.

Talia has been fascinated with Cacti this entire trip...so I had to get a picture of her with a couple of different types...

The cave extends back into the mountain a little over 200 feet.  In the late 1800's/early 1900's, it was actually made into a saloon, and then kind of a community center when things got more settled in the area.  The family that currently owns and operates it has owned it since that time, and still excavates on the property for artifacts and such.  It was pretty neat, although a little expensive for what you got.

Our family...

The proprietor took this picture, which shows the scope of the entrance, but not our family well.  So, I did a little editing...

We had a good time, and it was nice to get out of the car for an hour.

The next stop on our journey was a rock shop near the mines at Orderville.  Alec is collecting rocks, Kyle is still fascinated by rocks (although he's given up his "childish" collection, for now :)), Talia loves rocks, Cole loves rocks, and I love natural stone beads...okay, I love rocks too.  We all have a fascination.  It was a really neat shop...
From August 2011

I bought some beautiful blue quartz beads that I can't wait to make into some fun jewelry, Both the boys bought some rocks for their collections, we let Talia pick a small bag of tumbled stones (of course, she mostly picked pink and purple ones :) ), and Cole got a neat spook stone and a small skull carved and polished out of Blue agate (I think).  It was a short stop, but we all got what we wanted.

After that, we still had a long drive ahead of us.  We thought we would make it to the rental car place in time...until we got stuck in traffic right before Provo.  As it was, we were only about a 1/2 an hour late to drop off the car.  Then, we had to cram the rest of the luggage and all 5 of us into my car for the remainder of the trip home.  It's a good thing it was only about 40 minutes, the poor kids were packed in the backseat, I was sharing footspace with one of the coolers, and the back was piled all the way to the ceiling.  We made it home safely, however, and we were really glad to be home.

Arizona - Day 3 Part 3 - Wupatki National Monument

After the Sunset Crater National Monument, we continued on our drive.  We drove from the relative coolness of the higher elevation to a lower elevation and hotter temperatures.  We really wanted to see the Wupatki Native American ruins.

The "blowhole"
From August 2011

This is a crack in the earth's crust that "breathes", for lack of a better word.  Depending on air pressure, the hole either breathes cold air out, or sucks in air from the atmosphere.  On this day it was blowing out, and the air was as cold as any air conditioning.  Talia had great fun letting her braids float over the grate...
I wish I had taken a picture of the little information plaque that was there.  No one knows if there is a connection between the Native Americans building this large settlement at this blowhole, or if it's just coincidence...or what it was used for.

After our long drive and hikes, we were all dirty and starving.  We got cleaned up a bit, and headed to a local steakhouse with an interesting twist...

The waiters and waitresses don't only take orders, they also all sing...sometimes solo, sometimes big group numbers...it was so much fun!

And the food was pretty good too.  We enjoyed a relaxed evening, and then headed back to prep for the trip home in the morning...

Arizona - Day 3, Part 2

When Cole got home, we ate lunch then headed out.  We drove to the Sunset Crater, a very large Volcanic cinder cone mountain.  They no longer allow you to hike the actual Sunset Crater, but they do allow you to hike up the Lennox Crater, a smaller cindercone.  We decided we wanted to hike to the top of it...

From August 2011

It's a really steep hike, 1/2 a mile almost straight up.

It was a short but  intense hike, I really enjoyed it.  I also enjoyed that my kids took it as a challenge rather than just something I was making them do...

We drove all around the area, looking at all the lava formations...
